Mid 2010

admin | June 24, 2010

Exciting!

Lots going on so far this year. Firstly let me start by saying hoorah! I made an ad for Kodak as part of the international 2010 Cannes Lions Advertising Festival competition, run by MOFILM (UK & USA) and it came 5th! You can check out my winning vid and the others here. Cheers MOFILM for the opportunity and Kodak for the sweet prizes coming my way :) And ironically, thank you Canon for making the 5D Mark II so beautiful so I could make a beautiful ad.

Also, I’ve just finished the 2nd season of Its In The Bag for Maori TV so look out for that every Sunday evening starting in August.

And here’s a few stills from my up and coming films I will put up as soon as they’re finished!

Planet IndigenUs

admin | March 7, 2010

Creative NZ funded a few NZ artists to be a part of the Toronto Planet IndigenUs festival, mid to late last year. BlueBach was given the contract to film and edit some promotional  /  documentary styled pieces and therefore I was involved. Here’s a link to a highlights video they’ve just put up :)

Some things close-up look cool

I got this new camera (I mentioned earlier) and here is the latest - I got a macro lens for it - check out this vid for the beautiful things it can do! For a camera everyone keeps mistaking for a phone I think I got a good deal.

2010 baby!

admin | January 30, 2010

Almost at the end of January but it feels like Christmas was only yesterday! I hope everyone had a lovely summer break, mine was great and I feel revived and ready to get right back into exciting work for 2010!

The end of 2009 was busy but I’m very glad I got the chance to work on a couple of music videos for Auckland bad Tourist at Rubber Monkey in Wellington. Not sure when they’ll be released though.

January for me work-wise has been quite exciting. I spent a few days on Matakana Island with the Childspace crew headed up by Toni and Robin Christie - and filmed them as they attempted to completely demolish and rebuild the Kohanaga Reo there.  There’s a great history on the Island and we got some stunner interviews with the veterans of early childhood care. Will have a noice doco at the end of it.

Also in Jan I’ve established a new relationship with producer Rhonda Samoa and Director Helmut Marko on the post production of their first short film, Dusk (working title). Looking forward to cracking into that and will def keep this site updated with progress.

The silly season…

I don’t know about you but I love Christmas!! Not only is there good cheer around but I always seem to get a lot of work around this time…

Sorry I haven’t been frequently updating lately, I’ve decided to change a few things around on this site so keep checking back for new things and in the next few days - a new showreel FINALLY!

On a more professional note it has been great working for The Problem Gambling Foundation on some powerful testimonials this month, as well as establishing a new working relationship with Childspace Early Childhood institutes.

And as always am keeping busy on little projects here and there to keep me inspired, will post updates on them soon. Until then, Merry Christmas to my many followers…LOL!

The last few months

admin | July 5, 2009

Well hello all,

It’s certainly been a while. Let me catch you up on what I’ve been doing for the last few months. After the mad rush of editing 13 eps of Its In The Bag for Maori Television in record time, I moved on to a couple of corporates and then the completion of Libby Hakaraia’s documentary “The Village,” which follows mainly two teenage girls from small, Maori village Te Tii, situated up North.  This is a fascinating insight into a way of life very foreign to me and to a lot of people I know. Anyway this project had been through a few editors and I was really the end of a long rope, so definitely a joint effort. Well worth a watch, this doco has a refreshingly slow pace, really taking it’s time on shots, not feeling the need to fill space with noise. A segment of it can be viewed here.

After this, I started cutting the beautiful doco called “Makereti: The Enigmatic Guide” - another Libby Hakaraia project. This doco will be screening on Maori TV sometime either this month or next I imagine, I’ll keep you posted. It’s currently just getting the online done up in Auckland by the ninjas at Native Post - looking fab. This was a real learning project for me as it’s been my first historical piece, largely built out of old photographs and images. All the footage for it was shot in Oxford, England on the Sony EX1 which gave me drool-worthy images of stunning countryside and just all-round awesomeness. Hopefully somewhere along the line it will get to be broadcast in HD - it’s worth it.

Aaaaand after that (though it’s still chugging along in the background) - we went to Venice!!!!! Just got back a couple of weeks ago actually!! OK I’ll calm down. Creative NZ sent two fabulous NZ artists over to Venice to participate in the 2009 Biennale.

Judy Millar and Francis Upritchard had their work displayed in their respective Venues in the heart of the city. My job was to edit together the footage shot by Blue Bach’s crew of the artists’ venues and openings etc and immediately upload them to creative NZ’s website so people back home could view everything going on. These vids can be viewed here. What an amazing and character building experience. Needless to say it was go-go-go, but luckily the work involved charging round the island and setting up the laptop at the various places needed. What an incredible city that I would return to in a heartbeat. Waka Huia also came to be a part of the arts festival, performing at infamous St Marc’s Square and wowing locals and tourists alike. These guys are by far the best Kapa Haka group I have EVER seen. Moved to tears on more than one occasion. Footage of the group can be found here.

And that pretty much catches you up. My pace has slowed significantly since returning from Europe, now working on the finishing touches to Makereti, and editing up more of the Biennale footage with a few up and coming projects on the way. History repeats as I do some work for Execam in Wellington too - my previous employees who kept me for 3 years and taught me more than any school can. And in my spare time I have just entered a CG Society competition with good friends Dave Alve and Vaughan Flannigan and I will DEFINITELY blog more about this - some great matte paintings and environment studies are already completed and looking awesome. Thanks for reading! Check in soon as an updated showreel including all my work from 2009 is coming your way :)

It’s In The Bag

admin | February 21, 2009

Over the last few weeks I have been editing Blue Bach Production’s re-make of the classic Kiwi series “It’s In The Bag” - and it has been a blast! I can honestly say I can’t wait for these shows to hit the air waves - small town characters and witty banter from co-hosts Pio Terei and Stacey Morrison make for some hilarious viewing.

I have learnt a lot from this show - including some valuable insights on how hard every crew member works no matter what area they specialize in. I have also learnt that working in a room with a beautiful ocean view can’t hurt either!

New company…

admin | January 2, 2009

As advised by my accountant, I have started a company to invoice through - Peach House Productions! Ever since I was little I have been fascinated by peaches and all things peach-flavoured, so the name is only fitting! If you notice a change on my invoices this is why - it’s simply easier to operate through, and probably easier for you, too!

This also means I have a new e-mail address - nikki@peachhouse.co.nz, but don’t worry, if you continue sending to my old one it will still get to me. Bye for now!

Check it out…

New to this blog is my showreel page - check it out for a brief example of my work. It’s difficult to know exactly how to craft your showreel, given that potential clients / employers often want to see different things. So in this case I have gone with an overview - and should you wish to see a completed piece just gimme a yell!

Peace out

Welcome

Hi all - and thanks for visiting my site. I built this as an alternative to having my showreel on DVD and my CV on paper, though these options are still available to you if you’d prefer. Otherwise, have a look at my work and feel free to download my CV here :)
